The provinces have existed since the 19th century but did not have any legal status until 1987 when the 13th Amendment
to the Constitution of Sri Lanka established provincial councils.Between 1988 and 2006 the province was temporarily merged with the Northern Province to form the
North Eastern Province. The capital of the province is Trincomalee.

1. Koneswaram Temple

Undoubtedly one of the first sites to be ticked off the Trincomalee tourist map is this revered temple located atop a cliff inside Fort Fredrick. This important Hindu pilgrimage site displaying Darvidian architectural style is believed to be one of the Panch Ishwarams(five abodes of Shiva) with a swayambhu lingam. The shrine exudes sacred vibes and is a wonderful place for seeking solace in the divine presence. 2. Fort Frederick

This important historical landmark with an imposing entrance is a must-do for history and nature enthusiasts when you visit Trincomalee. While the history is interesting, the presence of freely-roaming spotted deer adds charm to the stroll through this fort. Built by the Portuguese, Fort Fredrick is partly under military occupation and also houses a famous Buddhist vihara and sacred Hindu temple. Breathtaking sunsets and sweeping views of Trincomalee bay and town make the visit truly rewarding. You can take a tuk-tuk to the fort and also buy some trinkets from the stalls inside.

3. Uppuveli & Nilaveli Beaches

North of Trincomalee, are these two pristine palm-fringed beaches perfect for a lazy, rejuvenating day by the sea. Uppuveli has powdery white sand, clear emerald waters and a lovely beach vibe with restaurants offering delicious Sri Lankan cuisine. Batticaloa


1.Batticaloa Fort

Batticaloa fort also known as Dutch Fort is situated in the midst of wonderful greenery and tidal ponds, having numerous stories and contentment attached with it. It was initially constructed by the Portuguese in 1628. Its impressive thick walls that hold much excellence and aesthetic esteem will most likely make you gaze with amazement. Inside the fort, an all-encompassing scenic perspective of the quiet tidal pond making the place more beautiful awaits the visitors.

2. Kallady Bridge

Batticaloa lagoon is popular for its `Singing Fish’. Amid the time of April to September, a clear but faint melodic sound like plucked guitar ascends from the lagoon waters along the Kallady Bridge. The ambiguous music is ascribed to a noise exuded from some type of marine life discovered in the lagoon. People plunge the end of an oar into the water and hold the opposite end to their ear to tune in to the music clearly.

3. Kalkudah and Passikudah

Situated around 35 km. north of Batticaloa, the two exquisite seas sides of Kalkudah and Passikudah settle on either side of the palm-tipped Kalkudah cliff. The twin bay shorelines, all around shielded from the monsoon by an oceanic reef make up a perfect spot for windsurfing, bathing, water skiing, sailing and so forth. It is a standout amongst other known reef structures in the eastern bank of Sri Lanka and has also been intended as a Marine Sanctuary by NARA.

2. Kumana National Park

3. Gal Oya National Park

Lying in the southeast of Sri Lanka, an unpolluted natural sanctuary in the west of Ampara, Gal Oya National Park remaining with its aesthetic beauty. 25,000 hectares of fecund sempervirent forests with open savannas lie along the lake, Senanayaka Samudra. It is the largest inland water body in Sri Lanka with little islands peppered on the surface. This quiescent calm conciliatory environment, unique perspective of nature makes you feel lives in a paradise on earth.
